The Schoolhouse, established in 1986, has created a curriculum that will provide experiences that are developmentally appropriate for children ages 3-5 in the areas of social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

The three and four-year-old curriculum concentrates on socialization and educational play. For most students this is their first experience in a group setting. Being part of a group, sharing toys and taking turns are important skills to be learned. Language skills are developed during free choice and circle time. The children are exposed to reading readiness activities such as counting the numbers at calendar time with the left to right progression. We work on name recognition throughout the year. Encouraging independence and building self-esteem are very important components in our program. We also do units on colors, shapes, numbers and seasonal themes. The children learn songs and finger plays throughout the year and bring home many creative art projects.

While socialization and educational play are a very important part of the Pre-K curriculum, the staff at The Schoolhouse plans activities that help prepare the children for kindergarten. We introduce the entire alphabet during the school year by studying a letter of the week. Usually on Tuesday and Wednesday, the class will attempt to write the letter of the week in the upper and lower case. During the week the teachers will emphasize that letter and sound with sign language, songs, books and art activities. We do units on colors, shapes, numbers and the five senses. A wide variety of hands-on materials are available for the children to use as well as the traditional equipment such as blocks, Lego's, playhouse, Tinker Toys, etc. The teachers are constantly interacting with the children during the day, encouraging them to try new activities.
